July 2026 Newsletter

Welcome to the July edition of our newsletter!

July has been another fantastic month at Orchar, filled with celebrations, music, creative activities, exciting outings, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful summer weather. From celebrating a very special 100th birthday and welcoming live performers, to exploring Dundee’s museums and bringing families together for our Quiz Night Fundraiser, it has been another month full of friendship, laughter, and wonderful memories.

As always, we hope you enjoy looking back on some of the highlights we shared throughout July.

Monthly Highlights

One of the biggest highlights this month was celebrating Sheila’s 100th Birthday. Residents, families, and staff came together for a joyful afternoon filled with singing, dancing, laughter, and birthday celebrations. Reaching such an incredible milestone made the occasion one to remember, and it was wonderful to see everyone celebrating this very special day together.

Another unforgettable afternoon was our live performance by Paul Sullivan. Residents enjoyed singing along to familiar songs, dancing, sharing refreshments, and making the most of a wonderful afternoon filled with music and happy memories. A huge thank you to Paul for bringing so much joy to Orchar.

Later in the month, residents enjoyed a relaxing Italian Afternoon Tea, complete with homemade tiramisu, mini pizzas, Prosecco, lemonade, and Italian music. A special thank you goes to our fantastic kitchen team for preparing such a delicious selection of treats, helping to create a lovely afternoon of conversation, laughter, and friendship.

We were also delighted to spend another afternoon exploring Dundee, with a visit to The McManus Museum, where exhibitions inspired fascinating conversations, memories, and stories about the city’s rich history.

Activities & Daily Life

Throughout the month, residents enjoyed a wide variety of activities including:

  • Balloon games, cycling sessions, the Hanger Challenge, and gentle exercise
  • Biscuit decorating and colourful photo frame decorating
  • Weekly music therapy sessions with Mary
  • Wimbledon Afternoon with strawberries, cream, and refreshments
  • Ladies’ pamper afternoons
  • “My Working Life” reminiscence sessions, sharing careers and life stories
  • Community outings to Fairmuir Social Club, the Quilters Exhibition, and walks along the waterfront
  • Regular opportunities to enjoy the sunshine with garden lunches, music, and relaxing outdoor walks

The beautiful July weather allowed us to spend even more time outdoors. Residents enjoyed lunches in the garden, walks along the waterfront, visits for tea and cake, and music therapy in the sunshine. Whether enjoying an ice lolly in the garden or taking in the sea views, every opportunity to be outside was greatly appreciated.

Whether keeping active, expressing creativity, sharing stories from the past, or simply enjoying time together, every day brought moments of fun, friendship, and laughter.

Special Moments

July was filled with many memorable celebrations and heartwarming moments.

We were delighted to celebrate the birthdays of Sheila, Douglas, and Pat, with each celebration bringing music, cake, friendship, and plenty of smiles.

Residents also enjoyed a wonderful Animal Encounter Afternoon, meeting giant rabbits, baby rabbits, a tortoise, a lizard, a mole, and even a centipede! It was an afternoon full of curiosity, laughter, and lots of gentle cuddles, with something to surprise everyone.

Our World Cup Sweepstake also proved to be great fun throughout the month. Congratulations to Pat, whose chosen team, Spain, became champions, with Anna and Jean also celebrating their successful predictions. The tournament gave residents something exciting to follow together and sparked plenty of friendly conversation along the way.

Community & Support

One of the most special moments this month was our Quiz Night Fundraiser, where residents’ families, friends, and staff came together for an evening of quizzes, laughter, and friendly competition. It was wonderful to see so many people supporting our Residents’ Comfort Fund while enjoying each other’s company.

Our Pop-Up Shop also continued throughout the end of July, helping to raise additional funds for future resident outings and activities. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated items, volunteered their time, attended the Quiz Night, or supported the Comfort Fund in any way.

We would also like to thank our entertainers, visitors, volunteers, families, and staff for their continued kindness, enthusiasm, and support. Your involvement helps make Orchar such a welcoming and vibrant place to call home.
